Chapter One
pages 13 - 15...

“I’m sorry to have to tell you this Dr. Hartmann, but your baby is dead.” What words to have to tell a father that had waited for 10 long years for a child? Dead. Dr. Dowling’s words would have caused any parent great grief and turmoil, but this OBGYN then handed the lifeless blue baby to him. A daughter, Dr. Dowling told him and with those words he added, “Again, I am so sorry”.

What would any of us have done at that time, I really could not say, but this man, Dr. Hartmann, my dad, lifted this dead child towards the heavens and declared, “Father, you promised that this child would live and not die, and I thank you that this child is alive.”

With those words, that dead, lifeless baby moved and began to cry. Shocked, Dr. Dowling grabbed the child and my dad could only begin to rejoice in the wonderful God that He served. My dad could only add that at the strength of her loud wails, that one day she would sing to a world and declare His Faithfulness in her life. That lifeless dead baby was I and I have tried to fulfill the words that my Godly father spoke over me to this day. A life beginning with miracles and everyday walking in His faithfulness and power.

However, this is really not the beginning of my miraculous story. I will need to go back several years. Read this account with an open heart, one that desires for God to do the same in your life.

My mom had a very tough beginning to life as well. At her birth, her mom died during labor. This left an alcoholic, Irish man with a small baby and young twins to raise on his own. By mom’s third birthday, it was too much for him to handle, so he abandoned her. I guess that would be what you would call it. He asked who in his family wanted a child to work in the fields, or do their daily chores and those were the new “family” members that mom had for her growing years. She recalls many hours of hard work, severe beatings and being molested. Tragic.

At 17, mom was being driven to another family for their bidding. The driver lost control of the car and it went barreling down a mountain. All were killed in the car, except mom, and she was in very critical shape. She has been told that she was in a coma for three months and several surgeries were performed to save her life. When she awoke, a visible scar was on her face, but one deeper inside her was the one that would rip her heart out.

Again, a doctor had to give the bad news. “Miss O’Conner, to save your life, I had to perform several radical operations. One was to remove all your female organs. I am sorry, but you will never be able to have a child.” She was crushed, not a complete woman, barren. She decided right then, never to fall in love and to live her life single and alone.

Mom moved from place to place and was very weak and always, it seemed, very ill. She had been told about a clinic in Davenport, Iowa that took in ill patients and let their interns “practice” on them. What did she have to lose? The doctors in California had told her that she would not live a long life due to her internal injuries. So off to Iowa, mom decided to go. After all she could die just as easily there as in California.

Are you getting the picture that God always has a plan and a way of escape for each of us? One that we may not understand may not see. But, God is always working on our behalf.

Who do you think is working as an intern in this clinic in Davenport, Iowa? Yes, that would be my dad. But before we start there, let me back up and share with you his background and life.
